OMFG, I could tell you, right now – my blood is absolutely on FIRE! Going through the screenshots of Gurren Lagann has brought back the memories of how ABSOLUTELY FREAKING EPIC this show was!

I just saw this picture of Simon in episode 24. Just thinking about how much this character has grown just makes me scream in excitement.

Perhaps when you saw him in episode 1, you would never imagine this kid who seemed to have absolutely no confidence in himself becoming such an amazing leader. I believe this was mainly through the help of two important people in his life: Kamina and Nia...

Simon (Gurren Lagann)

First I’d like to talk about Simon from Gurren Lagann. Yeah yeah, I know that Kamina gets most of the attention, and he does stand out more, but that shouldn’t take away from what a great hero this guy is.

He is the one Kamina believed in, after all, and was the one that invented most of the strategies used by team Gurren in their war for freedom. Kamina mainly served as inspiration and drive for Simon and the whole team to think they can win, but in reality they had the ability to do this all along...

Gurren Lagann has many philosophies and views of what it means to be masculine are not chauvinistic, and in fact all inclusive, and to be incredibly refreshing, never negative. When I first watched the show, I originally thought Kamina was going to boss Simon around and constantly be on his back, but n fact he was a great brother and always supported him.

His immortal advice, “Believe in the me that believes in you” is a HUGE first step for anyone who feels themselves inferior to get better. “Believe in yourself” is a crap phrase, and it is never said ONCE in the show, something which I think is awesome...

The 16th of October was a magical day, a day where the creators of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann held an ‘Anime Style Event’ in order to promote their show. But this was more of an event to nourish their hungry fans rather than promote an already popular show. During this event, the creators answered questions fans were dieing to hear; consequently, saving the lives of 15 fangirls who were going to take their own lives because of concerns regarding Simmon and Nia’s relationship. After the event these answers where then transferred over to 2channel, then to 4chan, then here; if that isn’t fresh, then I don’t know what is. Gainax’s latest giant robot series Gurren Lagann is finally making its way to American shores this month; the first subtitled DVD is in stores now, and the dub premieres tonight at 11:00 p.m. ET/PT on the Sci Fi Channel’s Ani-Monday programming block. To mark the occasion, we spoke with producer Yasuhiro Takeda, project planner (and Gainax co-founder) Hiroyuki Yamaga, mechanical designer and animation director Yoh Yoshinari, and assistant director Masahiko Otsuka.

Anime News Network: Like a see-saw, Gurren Lagann tilts back-and-forth in tone from serious to comedic — often several times within the same episode. How did you manage to balance the serious and tongue-in-cheek themes that you wanted to depict?

Gurren Lagann is one of the most inspiring series I have seen. From the very beginning, it has such a feeling of “you can do absolutely anything if you believe”. I love series like that.
