Huang Yiqing is my favorite Chinese voice actress who dubs a lot of Wuxia Series, as well as Qin’s Moon and Anime. A couple of days ago, I got to talk to her on weibo! Greatest moment in history when she agreed to answer some questions I had for her! Seriously, she is a very sweet and wonderful person to give up her time to do this interview.

Thank you so much for answering these questions. Can you first introduce yourself and tell everyone what you’ve been up to since you left voice acting?

My name is Huang Yiqing. I was once a voice actor for about 7 years, but now I’ve left and become a full time mother.

How did you get into voice acting?

I actually got into this line of work completely by accident...

I grew up watching English dubs of Anime and really love a lot of voice actors. If I had to choose, these are my top 25 voice actors in alphabetical order and their most memorable character. Most of these voice actors have impacted me on the earlier Anime I’ve seen, such as Digimon and Naruto.

My most memorable role/s: Takato Matsuda – Digimon Tamers

First time I heard Brian was as Takato in Digimon. And seriously, Digimon is like one of my first and favorite childhood Anime and he just seriously brought life to this character. I still remember rewatching some of the Tamer episodes in 2005 and I loved the depth of this character, and it wouldn’t have felt like that if the voice actor didn’t do a good job in acting...

If you think that acting is all about trudging from one audition to the next as you wait for the role that will make your career, think again. Like the writers, artists and musicians that regularly appear in “Hard Road to Rad,” actors are working in an industry that’s rapidly changing and they’ve had to change with it. As Tara Platt says, there’s a growing need “to be a hyphenate.” In other words, if you want to act, you have to be able to do other things too, and we’re not talking about traditional day jobs.

Kelvin: How did you become a voice actor?
Justin: I became a voice actor when I started up with FUNimation Productions as an ADR engineer, which is actually not the voice actor but it’s the guy who records the voice actors. And for about a year and a half I worked with Chris Sabbat, who was our voice director, and he kind of trained me on everything I needed to know and he eventually asked if I’d audition for a role and I did. The first role I got was the role of Dende on Dragon Ball Z and then from there I just kept putting in my auditions and keeping my fingers crossed.

I recently had the absolute pleasure to interview voice actors Tara Platt (Naruto) and Yuri Lowenthal (Ben 10) for their ongoing web series, Shelf Life. The hilarious series features Platt and Lowenthal, along with Travis Willingham and Bryan Enk/ Dee Bradley Baker, as four action figures confined to a little boy’s shelf. Having a conversation with actress Tara Platt is fascinating and fun, though it can be hard to keep up with her.

Animation fans have grown up with Steve Blum. From T.O.M., the laconic host of Cartoon Network’s anime block “Toonami” to snarling Wolverine in “Wolverine & the X-Men” to the nasally Guilmon of “Digimon,” his voice is instantly recognizable to many teens and 20-somethings.

This has been a big year for 47-year-old Blum. In addition to returning as T.O.M., following the May renewal of “Toonami,” and voicing Amon in the “Avatar” spin-off “The Legend of Korra,” Blum won a world record for the most video game roles (261), including turns as Grunt in the “Mass Effect” sequels and Vincent Valentine in “Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children.”

You might not recognize her face but her voice will jog your memory! Tara Platt is an amazing voice actor whose worked on shows like Naruto and Ben 10, films like the upcoming Tekken: Blood Vengeance and video games like Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe and Marvel vs Capcom 3. Aside from her work in animation, Tara Platt is an accomplished stage actress who’s played the title role in Romeo and Juliet and as Titania in A Midsummer’s Night Dream. She’s worked multiple times in shows written and directed by Star Trek: TNG’s John De Lancie. In 2004, she and her husband Yuri Lowenthal created Monkey Kingdom Productions, an independent film company and they also co-wrote a book on Voice Acting called Voice-Over Voice Actor: What It’s Like Behind The Mic.

Synopsis – Voice actor Steven Jay Blum, has portrayed in Digimon, Cowboy Beebop and presently believed to have done the voice for Goku in the anime movie Midnight eye. We were very fortunate to contact Steven, with a chain mail of requests we finally got a succesful lead. He was also generous enough to spend a few hours answering our questions. Thanks Steve.

Question -What inspired you the most to take on vocal roles?

Steven – Actually, I do it naturally. I have always loved mimicking voices and/or goofing on dialects and vocal affectations. I fell into it by accident and somethin’ stuck! It’s a lot of fun to be several different people (or whatever) every day!

Question – Did you start out as by doing impressions? Do mirrors help with lip sync and expression?

What do Suzaku from Code Geass, Simon from Gurren Lagann, and Sasuke from Naruto have in common? They share the same voice actor for the English version of these characters – Yuri Lowenthal. We had the opportunity to ask Yuri a few questions about his latest role in Afro Samurai (Jinno / Kuma), and also about voice acting and his career in general. From his answers, he certainly seems to have plenty of good humour and a definite willingness to learn. He even learned how to spell favourite in proper English!
